For the first time I would like to go through the muharrem and experience whats it means for Alevis. Can anyone explain to me what is expected of me during these days and how can I do the best I can?

hi ecan!

fasting in muharrem or hızır days is so important for alevis. muharrem has 2 means.
1-) it s being said by dedes that all of prophets fasted in muharrem. it s so holy days.
2_) it is called ''matem'' too. because imam hüseyin was killed in this days by yezid.

well then how do alevis behave?

in muharrem/matem days people feel in bereavement, in sorrow. they never drink water untill fast days finish.(during the 12 days). people abstain from the entertainment.

the end of the muharrem (in 12. day) it s prepared the ''aşure''.

Since muharrem is approaching I would have reckoned that there would be great response to share the knowledge of this period. Unfortunately I was mistaken.

Nofing cnt stop us 2 fast Muharrem days...Abstaning of all entartainment n sorrows cud be a hard free..
its kind a hard wit u starved to death..but too thirty neverthless u can drink ayran.

Dear ercan, i would firstly like to remind you that this forum consists of a high percentage of "Turkish Speaking" members, and there is a limmited amount of english speaking members, meaning you would expect to get a few replies.

secondly, to answer your question, there is no specific way in which you can fast. it often varies from different locations. Alevi's comit themselves to 12 days of fasting. this usually begins at sun rise till sun set. the fast is then broken by eating a "Raisen".

Alevis believe that by fasting, they are showing their respect to those who were starved in the harsh climates in the deserts. each day is dedicated to one imam and it lasts for 12 days.

on the 12th day of the fast, a special desert typed soup is made and passed to neighbours relatives and friends, this is to show equality amongst a comunity and is a sign of love.

I will try explain it with my broken english. 1st muharrem starts 20th january still 31th january. and 1st february is Asure-Day like Lon_Caner said.

This fasting is not like ramadan. Its different in this way: Not obligatory, fastin on water (you can drink tea or something else but also no red colored drinks) as a tribute for the 12 Imams. Eating no meat. Don't killing any animals (no blood). (also not as a remission of sins: from a universal (humanistic) Alevi perception each person is responsible for his own actions. These can't be 'washed' away or passed to others.) during a thirteen-day period in the Islamic month of Muharrem (Muharrem fast/Asura).
Is also a mind fasting not only food.

Muharrem is a kind of mourning because of the Kerbela...
So Alevis mourn between 20-31 January..(it changes every year)

Mourn generally start ar 00:00 and it continues 16:50...(generally it can change)

Alevis dont eat anything that times..(00:00-16:50)and dont eat meat,egg,cheese.. dont drink water..dont wash their body...

( I am Alevi too)

this perriod is a mourn for alevian and throughtout this period eating meat egg, entertainment ,or killing anhthing are forbidden.in this period alevian eat nothing from 00:00 to the sun's setting off.and you shoulnd't drink water.
and sometimes it is said that washing ur body is forbidden but how a man can enter cem without washing his body.belief comes from pureness.
