I wonder why we have to get english education at universities, is it really useful for us?

I am not a University student but think about it!

What is the harm of studying English in University?You must know the importance of English in this time.

i think it's normal.because english is the most used language in the world.
it's the technology time and everyone must know english in this time.if you want to be succesfull in your position at least you must be talking 2-3 languages.apart from universities,we can't get the best education of it.

It is controversial if we can learn English best from universities or not but to teach students in universities is a very logical idea and necessary of course.In fact,It would be better if universities gave second foreign language to students as optional lesson.For example,just like in the European countries universities,English is obligatory and students select another foreign language(French,Italian,Spanish etc..)to learn.

English is an international language, is 'the' international language, I think its important for the communication between people.

English is not obligatory any more it is a necessity so if you can't speak English you can't do anything whatever you want.English opens you every door that's why you have to learn it whether you want or not.

we have to pay attention what we have been losing as getting English education.
At first we have been losing the ability of communication in our native language also it is harmful for the students who are bad at English, this students generally studies at low or medium level universities. Those students have been having difficulty in understanding their important classes and they pass the classes knowing and understanding nothing.

Maybe it could be better for the students to get English class as a seperate class, but very qualityly

at our faculty, an english part exists.their talkings are different from ours.they maybe understand the lessons but in other side they are loosing from their language.
at your faculties -as you said- the lessons must be turkish.if they want to tell you in english,at first they must give you the best english education.after that you can understand easily.if not;nor they tell you anything neither you understand.

I am studying business management and my courses are in english,we have an english way of education.but it seems silly,lecturers are Turks students are Turks but the way we communicate is in English.from my point of view english courses should be given as seperate courses,via that both english proficiency and the gain from the lessons would be maximized.

the answer is easy,because Usa is the super power so they want people to speak their language.of course there should be a common language of the world and now it is english so it is a must for anyone who wants to be a world citizen.although english is dominant in the world we must insist on our mother tongue,we have to pay attention to Turkish,because language and culture are positively related to each other.the imposition of a culture starts with the adoption of language.we should learn english,but think and see the world through turkish.think about french people,they are very conservative in terms of their language,we should do the same.at least we can make the Turkish world to form a common turkish for communication.turkish is one of the oldest and widely spoken language,we should take the advantage of that.and also as some scientists say that turkish is the most appropriate language for science,so we should do something.

I must agree with that for sure.Especially in middle schools and high schools,to see the English situation of students is really disappointing me.Education quality is too low from standarts.They learn all the same things for years.

i think there is no point in studying in english at university. it is so useless and far more it's worse. i think this just helps students to learn things by heard easily but not new ideas they can creat. and this is also bad for main language. it will be forgotten soon in this way. BUTTT it is really clear that ENGLİSH is very important. i think students must be taught english and two more language before they get to university.

gaining the ability to speak a foreign language is of course very useful, especially these days, when English is used as an international language. I studied business administrations and my advanced english level helped me a lot going up the stairs in my academic and vocational life. :thumbup1:

But if your question was: "Are there any disadvantages of education in english language at universities?", I would say "Yes!" without hesitation... As I said before, I studied business administrations -but in the german speaking department, not in english- and completed my MBA studies also in the same department. When I started my PHD career at another university, where the education was in my native language -Turkish-, I experienced enormous difficulties... Because of having completed all the courses in german language, I knew the technical terms in German and English but unfortunately not in Turkish... :no:

So, I can stay pro or contra depending on what you are questioning about education %100 in foreign language at universities. :wink:

firstly ı want to introduce myself; ı am an ELT (english language teaching) student in trakya university.ı am totally in favour of teaching english to university students.because,as you have said English is a world-wide spoken language and ı think nobody objects to this idea.so, the main aim for teaching english is to make people communicate with the foreigners.in our vocational life english is the most crucial criteria.
while teaching english, teachers can use different kinds of methods such as direct method,total physical response, audio - lingual method and so on.the use of these methods can change depending on the students' age,cultural and linguistic backgrounds or teachers' circumstances(materials, orders from the directors.....).however, in turkey teachers mostly use direct method and eclectic method(mixture of all methods).these methods are out of date for elt department.every community has its own learning method, yet there is no obvious change in english teaching.as the time wears on new generations of elt will overwhelm the prejudices against english language.ı can say this for myself, at least...
